AGORA/Theater Critics - Thiago Silva
“Camila Bauer’s play invites the audience to enter the Amazon rainforest through the group of actors-dancers in the scene and the beautiful images. (...) The cast’s physical work (composed by Fabiane Severo, Guilherme Ferrêra and Henrique Gonçalves) is the big highlight of the performance, thus it conveys the basis for the main propositions of the scenic direction, as well as the dramaturgy that ventures on the non verbal language and requires the physical power of its performances to communicate its dramaturgical codes, based on the metamorphosing of the actor/actress and in the relations of the animals that inhabit the rainforest. In such a way, jaguars, alligator, sloth, snake, anteater, pink river dolphin, among other animals are presented to the audience through the actors and actresses’ metamorphic bodies, in a visible work of research, immersion and intense physical preparation with the movement direction signed by the choreographer Carlota Albuquerque.

In short sketches that do not possess linear narratives, we see the presentation of the animals in “acts” that introduce them to the audience, through images and body movements characteristic of each animal. Beyond those displays, there are discursive links that permeate - sometimes literally, sometimes metaphorically - the play with the intention to provoke tension on the spaces that humankind and nature occupy in Brazil in the contemporary world. In that sense, we see a tanglement of sounds (the soundtrack is signed by Álvaro RosaCosta and intensifies the atmosphere proposed by the scene direction, as if we were in the rainforest, in fact, through the sound design created by the artist), lights (equally atmospheric  with the lighting by Ricardo Vivian, suggests multiple meanings in the scenic discourse on one hand, and highlights the theatrical action on the other hand) and visual appeals that communicate among themselves and with the spectator through different paths, even though everything is theatrically designed in every presented image. The visual appeal, by the way, is a big virtue in Amazon. This is the axis of all action proposed in the stage. Visually speaking, it is a work that sustains itself in distinct ways of using space, via different relations between the actors and actresses and the different elements used in the scene - mostly the dolls and scene props created by Élcio Rossini, that help to conduce the play in narrative terms and become a primordial element of its visuality. It is interesting to observe, in that sense, that the absence of dialogue is a good choice, since the power of the work is summoned by the sensorial images designed in scenes about the Brazilian Amazon. Equally interesting is to perceive that this conjuration allows a series of interpretations for the children that, even disparate, walk to the same end: the urgency of looking to, debating about and preserving our ecosystems.”

Amazônia, a look at the forest, therefore stands out as an intelligent and sensitive work, as it builds an engaging imaginary universe, creates a poetic narrative centered on the corporeality of the performers and involves us in a subtle visual and sound narrative. It is a work that delights children and people who delve deep into our childhood with its fascinations, charms and threats.
